War Horse - Stage show - Review

War Horse is a play based on the book of the same name by adult writer Michael Morpurgo, adapted for stage by Nick Stafford. It follows the journey of Albert (young man) and Joey (horse), and how they survive WW1.

I saw the stage show in Manchester 3 years ago but for this review, watched an online verison of the show. I really enjoyed the show both in person and online. The way they use puppets in the show really impressed me.

As shown above, they use life size models for the puppets are they are oprated by people who move them across the stage. Even though you as the audience are still able to see the people amongst the puppets, it doesn't take away from the immersion of the show.

By the end of the show you truly believe that what have witnessed was the tragic life of a horse and his owner.

I was most impressed with the movements and idiosyncrasies they were able to nail down, They truly understood horses and how they act.

The reason I wanted to review this show in relation to my project, was because I enjoyed how the main characters didnt have to have a speaking role, but that the story still had an amazing flow. There are some parts of my film that have little to no dialogue and I am slightly worried that audiences may not be able to clearly understand the plot and how the characters are feeling. But having seen how War horse is easily able to capture the attentions of its audience, my worries are not quite as much in the forefront now. I am aiming to straighten out areas of the story this week and work on fleshing out the characters through their movements.
